"Le bus a commencé à avancer tout seul, j'ai directement sauté", raconte Yannis, 14 ans
Contrary to what was initially reported following the accident that took place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in Neuvillers (Libramont), a 14-year-old boy was indeed on board the TEC bus that crashed into an electricity pole on Grandvoir Street. Yannis recounted how he instinctively jumped from the vehicle when it began to move on its own, with the driver outside.
"I came to take the bus, which arrived around 1:50 PM," he explained. "The driver was inside but couldn't open the doors from the cabin. He called a colleague, who arrived a little later. They managed to open the front doors, but not the back ones. The second driver then left, and the first tried to resolve the issue from outside. That's when the bus started to move by itself while I was still sitting inside. By reflex, I jumped out immediately."
The young boy found himself outside the vehicle just before it collided with the electricity pole. Fortunately, he was unharmed, but the incident left a lasting impression on him, and the outcome could have been much worse. "I didn't see it coming. The pole broke immediately upon impact, and the electrical wires started to fall down," he added, visibly shaken by the experience.
When emergency services arrived, Yannis was no longer at the scene, which clarified why initial reports stated that the bus was unoccupied at the time of the crash. His mother, alerted by her son, had come to pick him up before the emergency responders arrived to take him to an orthodontist appointment in Libramont.
The cause of the bus's unexpected movement remains unknown and is currently under investigation.
